Glazing Types
Single Glaze
Single glaze, also known as single-pane windows, use just one piece of glass and has become uncommon because they are the least energy efficient kind of windows and are less effective at filtering out noise.
Double Glaze
Double glaze, also known as dual-pane windows, use two panes of glass separated by a spacer and air space within an opening to improve insulation against heat transfer and sound transmission. Dual-pane windows are the most common energy efficient glazing type on the market today.
Clear Glass
Clear glass is transparent, with no tints or coatings. Provides the lowest energy-efficiency.
Low-E
Low-E, or low-emissivity, is microscopically thin, virtually invisible, metal or metallic oxide layers deposited on a window glazing surface that allow visible light to pass through while reflecting heat and blocking harmful UV rays from the sun. In cold weather, the Low-E coating helps reduce the loss of heat by reflecting heat back inside the home.
Heat Retention Coating
Heat retention coating is a low emissivity coating on the inside surface of the interior pane and increases thermal insulation, keeping more warmth inside your home on cold days and nights.
Tempered Glass
Tempered glass is heat-treated to make it stronger than annealed glass of the same thickness. If broken, it breaks into small pieces without sharp edges, reducing possible injury.
Laminated Glass
Laminated glass holds together when shattered and can be used for safety and security, as well as sound reduction. Laminated glass is produced by bonding two or more layers of glass together with a plastic interlayer, usually polyvinyl butyral (PVB). If broken, the fragments will tend to adhere to the plastic (PVB) interlayer and remain largely intact, reducing the risk of injury or break-ins.
Obscure Glass
Obscure glass is textured glass that allows light into the room but also provides privacy. Comes in variety of different patterns and can be used as a beautiful decorative element for any space. Most commonly used in bathrooms and other privacy rooms.
